Applications open May 1st, 2025 for the 2026 Expedition Season.
Mental Health Disabilities among Veterans and First Responders still have a stigma. Those who experienced non-combat related trauma often feel they do not belong in the Wounded Warrior groups or therapeutic programs. Most women do not feel comfortable being in a room full of men while discussing the sensitive issues that come with trauma, especially if their trauma was caused by the hand of a man.
Although communities around the world have begun to put Mental Health in focus, necessary resources for most are not available. Especially for women.
We intend to change that.
Mental Health conditions destroy marriages and families, friendships and working relationships, the community ties-that-bind, not to mention what it does to the individual.
Untreated, Mental Health contributes to higher rates of domestic violence, childhood trauma, suicide, and self-harm. There's an increase of negligent and reckless driving, antisocial behavior--a tremendous cost to the healthcare and justice system.
We are damaged at every level of society with the monetary costs being in the BILLIONS.
By altering daily routines, by learning new skills and being useful, by being challenged to solve new problems, and by reconnecting with others with similar interests and emotional wounds, we can heal even the worst traumatic wounds.
Because of the rugged, challenging environments in which we work, clients have no choice but to be fully present. There is no time to wallow in the past, or continue drowning in shame and guilt. The only option is to get on with the business of the day...the business of living.
We encourage family members to volunteer during the same time their loved one is with us. Family should be involved at every step of the healing process (if the client desires). If we don't heal the family, the individual has little chance long-term.
We differ from many therapeutic organizations in that we focus on healing not just the individual, but the family and community, as well. We believe strongly that they are all connected, that the health of one affects the health of the other.
With that in mind, we offer continued client follow-up after they have completed one of our programs, we connect them with a support group or counselor in their home community, and we involve family or close friends whenever possible.
During Family Expeditions, we pay ALL expenses for those family members approved to join.
Our community partnerships support local artists, mechanics, counselors, guides, grocery stores, pilots, supply houses, hotels and bed & breakfasts, ferries, and maritime and aviation transport companies. We add thousands of dollars into the local communities we serve.
By supporting Hi-SEAS, you generate profound positive social impact; you offer someone their life back. You change the course of a child's life by returning to them their parent, grandparent, of friend.
As with all charitable contributions, you will get the expected tax benefits and access to exclusive benefits. But that is secondary to the people we want to work with. You get to heal someone, give them hope. And that is a very real and powerful thing.

Therapy in any form is expensive. Add in boats, planes, high-latitude, and rugged terrain, and it doesn't get any cheaper! But when measured against traditional therapy models, which average $5,000/day (100-150k per 30 days in residential treatment), our cost and needs pale in comparison. Our treatment costs average $10,000 per individual, which includes counseling and travel expenses.
As we strive to serve between 150-250 people each year, our yearly budget is between 2 and 2.5 million dollars. Budgetary needs are covered by generous Benefactors, Patrons, Donors, and Corporate Partnerships. We appreciate and value all those who support us in our mission, regardless of the level of support.
Physical material donations (boats, vehicles, art supplies, cameras, fuel to firewood) can be made, as well. We can provide a record of donation at full market value for tax purposes.
Contributions can be made online through Square in amounts up to $10,000 USD (links at the bottom of each Hi-SEAS webpage). For larger contributions, please contact Nancy Garner, Executive Director, to discuss how you can help meet our needs and the benefits of doing so.
